public's help to catch a man suspected of sexual assaulting a student on saturday morning, april 6 in a dorm room. the man met his victim earlier in the evening off campus. the attacker is not a student. white, 21 years old, 6'1", brown hair and blue eyes. anyone with information is asked to contact authorities. a robber shot and wound a donut shop owner but not before the owner stabbed the man. the wife opened the shop around 3:00 a.m. the owner then came at him with a knife and stabbed in. the man shot the owner three times as he fled. the owner went to the hospital and expected to be okay. >> oh, my god, that is down the street. that is where i go in the morning. i was just there the other

morning getting my breakfast. >> police haven't released a description of the attacker. the wife says he is 5'8", wearing all black. fire and explosion forced families to run for safety about 3:30 a.m. on angel avenue. when firefighters arrived flames were coming from a roof. they were whipped by winds that spread the winds. he woke up when he heard the explosion and then rushed to him his neighbors. >> we were sleeping and then there was an explosion. and a bright light. we looked outside the window and the garage had exploded. >> everyone got out safely. no one was hurt. one person was treated after a fire about 7:30 a.m. officials say it appears the

fire started in a bedroom. the coroner identified a man killed yesterday in a motorcycle crash. he lost control of his bike while riding in san jose. he was thrown from the motorcycle. not clear what caused him to lose control. >> officials are looking into the death of a woman. a jogger discovered the body of giselle esme ayala. she graduated from santa rosa high school and a student at cal poly san luis obispo. the autopsy may be weeks before a cause of death is established. authorities recaptured a inmate. 21-year-old kohlton kumnick was missing from the marsh creek detention facility in clayton

can now play a game they have been waiting for for a long time, powerball. >> there it goes. california lottery began selling at 6:00 a.m. this morning. it promises bigger jackpots. tickets are sold in 43 states. so the odds of winning 1-175 million. and the price is $2 a ticket. sunnyville's mayor is taking part in it. >> if enough money generated we could take the burden off the state and help local communities with the school system that would be a big plus. >> the first power ball drawing involving california will be wednesday. the prize is $60 million. >> as the mayor mentioned with powerball in california there is hope of renewed interest.

. new mexico investigators are looking into had cause of a deadly school bus crash today. the driver was killed and 9 children were injured. two of the children have serious injuries. police believe the driver was taking a curve when the bus crashed. investigators are expected to be there late into the night. the cal women's basketball is back home after a heart breaking loss in the ncaa final four playoffs. but it was still a great season. >> very exciting. really fun. we had a blast. good year. fun teammates. cool program.

complete bay area news coverage continues right now, this is ktvu channel 2 news at 5:00 p.m. >> screaming winds topples trees and power outages, causing problems all day and it is not over yet. winds as high as 75 miles per hour. that is hurricane force winds through the bay area. those winds are strong enough to do serious damage. our coverage continues with ktvu's robert handa live in the mountains. robert? >> reporter: well, we saw and felt the effect of the wind. especially here in the mountains. >> reporter: the strong wind had trees swaying today and the older rotting trees came crashing down. the intense gusts battering the

mountains took a toll on trees. he was stunned when this tree was knocked down. >> the tree split in half and came down on the house. sounded like we had an airliner on the roof. >> reporter: the swaying branches made it difficult for workers removing a tree that fell against this home while battling the wind. >> does scare you. i have been doing this 30 years now and it is never easy. it is scary. >> reporter: at times he climbed tree to tree to take advantage of the brief calm moments. >> they threat go too long. rotted out, and now it fell.

death. >> big shock. somebody that you see every single day. >> reporter: she is stunned by the death of a doctor she calls family. >> always cheery. always wanting to talk. it is a sad, sad news. >> reporter: she is speaking about a native san franciscan and a dermatologist. firefighters last night responded to a call to his apartment building a few blocks away. >> fire trucks and ambulance came and usually when they are here they are here for a half hour. they were here for four hours. >> reporter: it is what they didn't find that prompted a call to detectives. >> no obvious signs of trauma so therefore the circumstances were suspicious for them to

contact homicide investigators. >> reporter: police detained one person in connection with the death. >> i saw 10 cops and this morning they pulled someone out of here handcuffed and the person was laughing. >> reporter: workers at his apartment said he had been renting there. police haven't confirmed who they have detained but they are asking the public if they have information to call detectives. david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. the remains of a 25-year- old american diplomat are on their way back to the united states. she was killed saturday in afghanistan by a suicide car bomber. they were delivering books to school children. her body will arrive today in delaware. university of california at berkeley was the scene of a rally calling for immigration
